How to register a death
Once the death has been verified, a doctor will issue a death certificate and email this directly to the registrar. This is usually sent to the closest registrar to the deceased or to the closest registrar from the family’s home address.
The first step is to call the registrar to let them know if the situation. Once the registrar receives the death certificate, they will call you back and register the death over the phone with you. They will then email us Form 14, which is needed to proceed with funeral arrangements.
The registrar may ask for details from the following information:
- Death Certificate
- Birth Certificate
- Marriage Certificate
- Medical Card (NHS Number)
The registrar can close off pensions, passports, driving license, blue badges, and will need the deceased’s national insurance number. They are very helpful and will close off anything else that is relevant.
As soon as the death is registered, you will receive an abbreviated copy of the death certificate in the post. You can request more extracts (copies) of the death certificate from the registrar too, at a cost of £10 (approx.) each.
Once we receive Form 14 from the registrar, we will call you to arrange a day/time to see you/the family to go through all the arrangements and select a suitable day/time for the service. This can be done either at our premises or wherever is easiest for the family.
